D-ITP Kick-off Even
Prof. dr. Erik Verlinde

This busy and jubilant occasion saw the premier of the D-ITP promotional film, which was followed by an introductory speech by chairman of the executive board, Erik Verlinde, who gave an overview of the Institute’s plans and ambitions.  The event concluded with a panel discussion, moderated by Margriet van de Heijden, who quizzed the panellists about the D-ITP’s research ambitions

Among the many attendees were representatives from the D-ITP’s industrial partners, ABN-AMRO, the Dutch National Forensic Institute, Shell and McKinsey.

The Delta Institute for Theoretical Physics unites the existing three Institutes for Theoretical Physics of Utrecht, Leiden and Amsterdam.  These three Institutes, who share similar research interests, have come together to raise the profile of Dutch theoretical physics, to further increase the quality of their research and to promote a greater connection between theoretical physics and society.

The consortium received a huge boost in December 2012, when it was awarded a grant worth 18.3 million euros to be spent over the next 10 years, by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), as part of its ‘Gravitation Program’.  In attracting a number of highly-talented scientists, who have been assigned to strategically chosen research themes,  the research consortium is already off to a flying start.

Besides working in conjunction with the DRSTP towards getting theoretical physics back to the top of the international agenda,  the D-ITP has also won the support of a number of prestigious private partners.  Their support highlights the importance of theoretical physics not only with regard to their own enterprises, but also with regard to society in general.  Working together with these partners, the D-ITP will be able to bring undergraduates and graduates alike into closer contact with industry and permanently strengthen the relationship between theoretical physics and society.
