The new programme (60 ECTS) will be offered over 18 months at the campuses of both Amsterdam universities. By joining forces, the universities create the conditions to position the EMFC programme internationally and to invest more effectively in the capabilities that developments such as sustainability, digitalisation and AI require from financial executives. According to programme directors Bert Steens (VU) and Sander van Triest (UvA), this need for a strong, internationally recognisable EMFC programme is the main driver behind the collaboration. The programme will be offered in both Dutch and English.
The new joint programme also responds to the demand for a shorter time for obtaining the degree. The programme can be completed in one and a half years (18 months), without compromising its post-initial character or the high graduation requirements. In addition, the programme design offers the flexibility to spread courses over a longer period (for example over the original 2 years).
The Executive Boards of both universities and the Dutch Association of Register Controllers (VRC) have expressed their support for the initiative. Professor Roel Beetsma, Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business at the UvA: ‘The collaboration between VU Amsterdam and the University of Amsterdam gives us access to a larger network, a broader advisory board and the clout to further innovate the programme. A concrete example is the shortened 18‑month track - a first in the Netherlands. More importantly, with this joint EMFC programme we are joining forces to strengthen the kind of financial leadership society needs in an era of digitalisation and AI, in which the work of controllers is changing fundamentally.’
Professor Mirella Kleijnen, Dean of the School of Business and Economics at VU Amsterdam: ‘For decades, the EMFC has proven its value as a programme for future financial leaders who play a decisive role in creating sustainable value by and for their organisations. We not only want to continue this, but further enhance it for national and international talent and their organisations. We look forward to working with the UvA on our joint EMFC programme, which will start exactly 40 years after VU Amsterdam first launched the programme in the Netherlands. The new Amsterdam-based EMFC programme continues the tradition of closely following – and driving – innovation.’
The first degrees of the joint programme are expected to be awarded in February 2028.
