SILS Research Day 2026 brings Research, Collaboration and Inspiration Together

On Tuesday 30 June, the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences (SILS) hosted its annual SILS Research Day, a full-day event showcasing the breadth of research across the institute. The programme, enthusiastically organised by the SILS PhD/PD Council, brought together staff and students for talks, workshops and networking.

Scientific presentations and interactive workshops

Scientific presentations were given by early-career researchers from several research groups, including Molecular Biology and Microbial Food Safety, Molecular Plant Pathology, Molecular Cytology and the Institute of Physics. Throughout the day, participants could also join three workshops: a diversity and inclusion session led by members of the SILS DEI committee, a career opportunities workshop, and a hands-on stinging nettle session where attendees prepared snacks and tea.

Poster session and keynote lecture

The afternoon poster session stimulated lively scientific discussions. The best poster prize was awarded to Cloé Villard for her innovative work on a 3D-printed artificial feeding system for sterile rearing of Bemisia tabaci nymphs. Furthermore, the keynote lecture by Prof. dr. Koen Verhoeven (Netherlands Institute of Ecology, NIOO-KNAW) explored how to navigate interdisciplinary research, with a particular focus on combining molecular biology and ecology.

An inspiring conclusion

The day concluded with dinner, offering further opportunities for informal interaction and collaboration. SILS looks back on an inspiring Research Day and would like to thank everyone who made this day possible.
