Plant signalling under stress

Since 2017, Prof.dr. Munnik has led the Chair of Plant Cell Biology. His research focuses on signal transduction processes in plant stress and development, in particular on the role of phospholipids in membrane signalling and trafficking. His group investigates how plant cells perceive signals such as drought and heat, and translate these into appropriate responses. This fundamental research contributes to our understanding of how plants adapt to changing environmental conditions and provides new starting points for the development of climate-resilient crops.

Nutrients and plant growth

More recently, Munnik has also become interested in nutrient signalling, particularly phosphate (P) and nitrogen (N). These nutrients are essential for plant growth, but their use and availability are also connected to a range of societal challenges.

Academic service

Teun Munnik obtained his PhD with distinction from the UvA in 1997 and has previously held positions as Assistant Professor and Associate Professor at the University of Amsterdam. He has also chaired both the Biology Examination Subcommittee and the overarching Examination Board for the Life Science programmes. Since 2013, he has served as an Associate Editor of Plant Physiology, a leading journal of the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB).
