The Central Works Council (COR) keeps receiving signals from its constituency regarding their concerns about the impact of AI on all components of education. We have shared these concerns with the Executive Board and regularly consult with several stakeholders within the UvA.

Last month, a fruitful and constructive conversation took place between a delegation from the COR and representatives of Academic Affairs, in the run-up to the formulation of a UvA vision on AI in education. As a result of this meeting, the COR sent a letter to the stakeholders, which was also communicated to the Executive Board.

Request for clear guidelines and balance

In this letter, the COR emphasizes staff requests for clear guidelines and clarity about the direction in which the UvA wants to go, and its concrete impact on educational practice. We mention the impact on

  1. the validity of examinations;
  2. educational quality;
  3. workload for both teaching and support staff.

The COR also draws attention to the balance between these topics because adjustments within one theme automatically have an impact on the other two. The COR therefore calls for better coordination of implementation and vision between the various stakeholders within the organization.

Impact on education and work pressure

The impact of AI on education and (therefore) work pressure is one of the COR’s strategic priorities. We are closely monitoring developments within the UvA and hope to collect as much relevant information as possible from the work floor. If you want to help the codetermination bodies, please share your experiences and concerns via your faculty works council, or approach the COR directly via cor-uva@uva.nl.
